Development and evaluation of sustainable/biodegradable electrochemical devices for the detection of sulfonamides

Abstract

The presented project proposes the development of sustainable electrochemical platforms, based on carbon composites and printed devices prepared from natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES), for the quantification of sulfonamides in environments directly related to the livestock industry, the main consumer of this class of antibiotics. As a substrate for the development of printed electrodes, it is proposed to use office paper waterproofed with vegetable palm and soy waxes solubilized in hydrophobic natural deep eutectic solvents (hNADES), as a replacement of petroleum-derived paraffin commonly used for this purpose. For carbon-based composites and inks, their preparation will be carried out using natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES), with demonstrated versatility of applications, replacing conventional solvents, evidencing the sustainable aspect of this proposal, since the mentioned classes of NADES within this project are biodegradable. The project also proposes the complete replacement of the mineral oil/paraffin used for the elaboration of carbon paste electrodes by hNADES, incorporated or not with vegetable wax, to form a sufficiently hydrophobic and biodegradable binder to be used in these electrodes. The characterization of both composite and printed electrochemical devices will be carried out using electrochemical techniques, image microscopy, contact angle and thermogravimetric techniques. The same electrochemical techniques will be used to develop an analytical methodology for the quantification of antibiotics, sulfamethazine and sulfadimethoxine. Finally, the project proposes an eco-scale to assess the sustainability of the proposed methodology, proposing a tool with unprecedented application in the evaluation of analytical methodologies developed from electroanalytical techniques. This project converges with the Sustainable Development Goals - 2030 Development Agenda- in the categories 6 (Clear water and sanitation) and 12 (Responsible consumption and production). (AU)
