Abstract

This project proposes to investigate the potential of mesoporous nanoparticles of bioactive glasses containing niobium (MBGNb) as bioactivity promoting agents in bone tissue engineering. The strategy is to combine and explore the advantages of systems in nanometric dimensions and the intrinsic ability of bioactive glasses in the controlled delivery of biologically important species that stimulate/accelerate the biomineralization processes related to bone regeneration. The motivation arises from the urgent demand for more effective alternatives in the management of bone injuries caused by both trauma and disease. To assess the potential of MBGNb, a set of robust studies organized into four research plans was proposed: i) Assembly and characterization of vitreous scaffolds; ii) Multifunctional bioactive injectable paste; iii) Bilayer hybrid barrier membranes for guided bone regeneration; iv) Hybrid bioinks for bioprinting functional constructs for bone tissue engineering. In all these studies, we aim to explore the applications of MBGNb nanoparticles in tissue engineering and try to answer prominent questions related to the effectiveness of these glassy nanoparticles in ion therapy and biomineralization. The proposal is set to answer pressing questions across disciplines and is strongly tied to bioengineering research, with special attention to bone tissue engineering. (AU)
