Abstract

In recent years an Eco-Feminist strand of multispecies anthropologies has begun to shed new light on the shared existence of humans with non-humans and probed the possibilities for their good life - and death - on a 'troubled planet' (Tsing et al., 2017; Besky and Blanchette 2019; Calkins 2021). But comparative studies of multispecies ecologies have remained rare. An ethnography of the ecologies of circulation and redistribution in Olinda (Pernambuco) funded by FAPESP proposes to contribute to this research paradigm with a perspective from the urban Global South. In this she will be supported by André Thiemann, an ecological anthropologist working on the political-economic transformations of post-socialism. Their collaboration will push for an innovative comparison of the materialities of value in the Global South and East, by contrasting the peripheral ecology of the mangroves of Pernambuco with that of the Djerdap National Park on the banks of the Danube in Serbia.
