Abstract

As the Earth's interior behaves elastically, the propagation of seismic waves is determined by the elastic constants of the component material. Comparing the elastic properties of potentially relevant minerals with seismic observations allows us to relate these observations to geological processes and the thermal and chemical state of our planet. Thus, this research seeks to employ ab initio modeling techniques to advance our understanding of seismic velocities in aggregates and melts, with a specific focus on interpreting a new upper-mantle seismic tomography model beneath South America, which is being derived through the FAPESP Regular Project 2022/04357-0. By integrating seismic tomography velocity-attenuation models with high-pressure mineral physics principles, we aim to elucidate the complex interplay between temperature, composition, and geodynamic processes within the Earth's upper mantle, particularly for the upper mantle underneath South America.
