Abstract

In this study, we propose to investigate the importance of intracellular superoxide dismutase (SOD) in regulating the concentrations of NO (Nitric Oxide) by comparing the amounts of Guanosine Cyclic 3':5'-Monophosphate (cGMP) formed by the enzyme soluble Guanylate Cyclase in normal V79 Chinese Hamster lung fibroblasts with those of transfected V79 cells which over express the inserted human gene for Cu/Zn sod. The results of this study should provide some insight into the importance of sod in regulating intracellular NO quantities and may also be of potential therapeutic importance in promoting the development of agents capable of modulating the concentrations of sod in vivo, a means of controlling NO levels.
