Search for etiological factors of dental enamel biomineralization defects: in vivo experimental study

Abstract

Amelogenesis is the process of dental enamel formation, which is regulated by proteins and enzymes secreted by ameloblasts. Interruptions during amelogenesis can lead to failures in matrix secretion, resulting in enamel developmental defects. The etiological factors of enamel defects are widely unknown, but they are associated with systemic, genetic, and environmental factors that act during the gestational period and, mostly, in early years of life. Among environmental factors, exposure to toxic substances such as tobacco and toxic stress can cause numerous alterations in childhood development and may also be associated with enamel defects. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore the exposure to adverse effects during infancy in rat pups and its impact on dental enamel biomineralization. Specifically, molecular effects on amelogenesis and the presence of morphological, quantitative, and qualitative alterations in fully erupted teeth will be assessed. (AU)
