Abstract

This project deals with two novel applications of the two-dimensional cutting problem. These problems typically arise in companies and are quite relevant from an academic point of view. They are the multi-stage cutting problem with usable leftovers and uncertainty in item demand, and the guillotine cutting problem with irregular items. The use of leftovers in cutting problems is a technique of great practical importance, with a strong economic and environmental impact due to the reduction of raw material waste. Producing items from usable leftovers with variable dimensions to satisfy random demand that occurs over a finite planning horizon is a very common real-world situation that involves a complex decision-making process, as well as an application that has not yet been explored in the literature. Cutting irregular items has been studied in the literature and is also present in many real-life situations. However, the guillotine cutting of irregular items is a little explored study and has only been approached heuristically. The study of these two problems are innovative application and brings original contributions from a methodological point of view since mathematical models are proposed and solution methods are developed and implemented to deal adequately with the problems. This project also has a theoretical contribution, which lies in the investigation of the methodology for dealing with both problems. The results of this project will be published in scientific conferences and submitted to specialized journals. (AU)
