Abstract

The main scope of this proposal is to compare Phanerozoic fold-and-thrust belts with their Proterozoic equivalents in terms of their deformational styles and regimes. The study will be carried out through the construction of geological cross-sections orthogonal to the structures, geometrically controlled, balanced and restorable, based on field surveys, existing geological cartography and seismic data when available. U-Pb geochronological data will also be carried out on detrital and igneous zircons, aiming to elucidate any stratigraphic doubts, and thermochronological studies using fission traces and (U-Th)/He, in order to establish tectonic and exhumation ates of the massifs. Three cases of fold-and-thrust belts with different ages and geological contexts will be analysed: 1) The southern Espinhaço thrust front; 2) the Maranhão fold-and-thrust belt, in the Peruvian Andes; and 3) the Itaiacoca belt of the Southern Ribeira Belt.
