Waterproofing of the slab of the main building of CPQBA

Abstract

The CPQBA has approximately 13,200 m2 of built area, distributed across several facilities. The main building, where the Center's administration and 3 of the scientific divisions are located, with approximately 1860 m2 of built area, distributed across 3 floors, has leaks in its upper slab that compromise the development of research activities. During the last rainy season, a leak occurred in one of the laboratories that reached one of the pieces of equipment, a liquid chromatograph valued at approximately R$ 300 thousand, causing a short circuit, which fortunately did not cause any significant damage.Due to the architecture of the building and the utilities existing on the slab (exhaust hood motors, water tanks, fans, pipes, etc.), it is not possible to build a roof-type covering. Replacing the current waterproofing consisting of asphalt blanket, polystyrene sheets and concrete is also economically unfeasible. Therefore, the option presented for resolving infiltration points at an affordable cost is the use of a rubber-based waterproofing product. In this process, the area to be waterproofed will be cleaned, an acrylic membrane and sealing compound will be applied to the existing cracks, and a liquid rubber-based waterproofing product will then be applied. This technique has already been applied to small areas in other CPQBA facilities and has proven to be effective. The area to be waterproofed is approximately 615 m2. (AU)
