Peptides and peptidases: biological activities in infectious diseases and cancer

Abstract

Peptides and peptidases are involved in such a way in the functioning of cells and of multi-cell organisms that practically the entire biological system or experimental model of some form uses substrates, mediators, inhibitors, antibiotics or antigens of peptidic nature as well as regulatory enzymes, which degrade, generate or chaperone peptides. The different biological activities of peptides and peptidases are always interlinked representing decisive steps in a variety of fundamental events in biology and medicine. The project involved several lines which contemplate the synthesis of peptides derivates and inhibitors, the use of peptides in experiences of immunoprotection, of antimicrobial and antitumoral cytoxicity, of regulation of immune responses. In the field of peptidases, the lines are concentrated on endooligopeptidases of tumor cells, fungi and bacteria. Substrates and serino-, cysteine- inhibitors, and metallopeptidases and catalyst mechanism are other lines focusing on kallikrein, catepsines, NEP, PHEX, ECA. (AU)
