EMU: Expansion and updating of the core facilities of the Research Support Center for Materials Science and Engineering (NAPCEM) at UNIFESP/SJC

Abstract

In attention to the FAPESP 2023 call for Small-Medium Multi-User Equipment (EMU-PMP), the Center for Research and Support for Material Science and Engineering - NAPCEM - of the Federal University of São Paulo, São José dos Campos campus - UNIFESP/ SJC - represented by its coordinator, presents its proposal for expansion and updating/modernization of the multi-user equipment core facilities. NAPCEM is a core facilities center that joins medium and large equipment to support a postgraduate program and researches in the area of Materials Science and Engineering. NAPCEM provides support to researchers from the Postgraduate Program (PPG-ECM), for the Materials Innovation Center of UNIFESP (CIM/EMBRAPII/UNIFESP). Through a survey carried out by the NAPCEM Committee among all researchers engaged in the Material Science area of the UNIFESP/SJC, in this proposal we request the acquisition of equipment and the repair of three other equipment. In terms of quantitative and qualitative increment in the pure and applied research, we request two equipment that do not exist in our Campus for the characterization of mechanical properties: a microhardness meter and a tribometer. In terms of maintaining our competitive capacity, as part of our equipment is already becoming obsolete and without spare parts and/or extremely high maintenance costs, we requested a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and a particle and zeta potential analyzer via scattering dynamic light (DLS). In terms of corrective and preventive maintenance, we requested financial support to repair the liquid nitrogen generator, purchase a pair of sensor for DSC/TG characterization of a high temperature thermal analysis system (up to 1600 C) and exchange the two computers of MEV/EDX, which are over ten years old, still operate with Windows XP and for this reason are presenting several problems and stopping the equipment. This proposal is supported by six Associated Projects, two of which are thematic projects, three are regular projects and one is a large EMU/FAPESP project. All coordinators of the associated projects are researchers of the PPG-ECM, they supervise students at PPG-ECM and develop collaborative research between themselves and other researchers at UNIFESP/SJC. Due to the importance, transversality and support that NAPCEM provides, PPG-ECM, CIM/EMBRAPII/UNIFESP and the Multi-User Laboratory in Biotechnology of the Institute of Science and Technology of the Federal University of São Paulo (LMBio/ICT/UNIFESP) support this proposal, according to documents attached to SAGE.
