"EMU: Acquisition of 3D bioprinting, laser cutting and fluorescence microscope for implementation of organs-on-a-chip and organoids facility"

Abstract

Research Centers, Universities, Pharmaceutical Industries face ethical and regulatory issues for animal experimentation, making it necessary to find sustainable and effective solutions for testing bioproducts. In this way, microfluidic systems (organ-on-a-chip technologies) are innovative enabling platforms for organ modeling and drug screening; being able to mimic complex tissue architectures and various organ-level interactions. During my stay at the Terasaki Institute (Los Angeles), University of California at Los Angeles and California State University Northridge I developed a skin-on-a-chip and wound-on-a-chip device to replace animal testing. Therefore, I have experience to develop organs-on-a-chip for testing dressings, drugs and bioproducts as this system uses skin-on-a-chip with adaptations. The Bioengineering and Biomaterials Group at FCF/UNESP, which I coordinate, develops several dressings for dermal regeneration and developing this more real and complex system will facilitate the development of various natural and/or synthetic dressings. Furthermore, the entire São Paulo community (researchers and teachers) will have an "Organs-on-a-chip facility" to test their bioproducts, biomaterials and bioactive compounds. (AU)
