EMU: Proposal for the acquisition of a Promethion Core Indirect Calorimetry System to determine energy expenditure, nutritional needs, the rate of use of energy substrates and the thermogenic function in mice.

Abstract

The acquisition of the Promethion Core Indirect Calorimetry System for use in rodents is currently the gold standard method for this type of study, due to its high resolution and is of great interest to different research groups at the Ribeirão Preto Medical School-University of São Paulo, which aims to investigate changes in metabolism and energy balance. With the use of this equipment, the results obtained from traditional methods of biochemical and molecular analyses in cells and ex vivo tissues can be expanded with the high-resolution and real-time acquisition of in vivo metabolic parameters. More specifically, the analysis of energy expenditure and body temperature in mice subjected to thermal challenge and different types of diets and models that alter glycemia, food intake, animal weight, and brown adipose tissue activity will have a great impact on the production of knowledge, on the quality of publications related to this topic, on the expansion of scientific collaboration in the state of São Paulo and on the training of human resources.
