EMU: Corrective maintenance and hardware and software update for a DNA ABI 3500 Genetic Analyzer

Abstract

LABMAS has been characterized as a Multiuser Laboratory since its foundation in 1997, currently focusing on providing DNA sequencing services to support the user community through the use of the medium-sized automated DNA sequencer ABI 3500 Genetic Analyzer with 8 capillaries. Maintenance and replacement of parts are sought to keep this equipment in proper working condition, which has been designated as a Multiuser Equipment (EMU) by FAPESP since its inception.Furthermore, as a support instrument for the ABI 3500 sequencer, there is a request for the acquisition of a real-time PCR equipment, which will be integrated as an EMU within the LABMAS Multiuser Center. In order for this EMU to continue serving as an excellent tool for research, teaching, and outreach, its hardware needs to be updated as its operational life is coming to an end. Additionally, software updates are needed to enhance its performance and prevent obsolescence and inoperability. The financial resources requested are justified as a strategic investment for research in São Paulo. (AU)
