Abstract

Activities through which the Visiting Researcher will participate:Professor Vitale has extensive experience in the area of ¿¿analytical chemistry, working on topics related to chemometrics, such as proposing classification models and multivariate resolution of curves aiming at obtaining calibration models. These topics are of great interest to the Applied Instrumental Analysis Group (GAIA) of the Chemistry Department of UFSCar. Currently, the project entitled "Proposal of a universal calibration procedure using Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS)" is being carried out, with funding from CNPq (process 302719/2020-2). One of the main topics is the use of the LIBS technique for the evaluation of electronic waste samples. The spectral datasets obtained are complex, as they have more than 10,000 variables (wavelengths from 186 to 1042 nm) and hundreds of samples. Thus, the interaction with Prof. Vitale will be important to identify underlying information in the data, which will allow proposing recycling routes for elements such as Cu, Ag and Au. In addition, two new projects are being prepared that will study possible hydrometallurgical routes for metal recovery. The first project is entitled "Proposal of Hydrometallurgical Routes and Evaluation Procedures for Electronic Waste Recycling: Integration of Chemometric Techniques, Data Science and Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS)" and is under evaluation at CNPq. The second is in the writing phase and will soon be submitted to Fapesp as a regular project. Both projects are expected to begin their activities in 2025. Thus, Prof. Vitale's visit will be very beneficial to visualize mutual cooperation paths. (AU)
