The foundations of Brazilian State and nation (c.1789 - c.1850)

Abstract

The thematic research project The foundations of Brazilian State and nation (c. 1789-1850) is joined by 23 (twenty three) researchers from nothing less than 10 (ten) Brazilian Universities. It is the expression of a single complex of hypothesis and a single strategy of research aiming at a better understanding of the threads that rum the relationship between State and Nation intelligible in the more general context of the crisis and overcoming of the "Ancien Régime" in Portuguese America. The project has two seminal hypothesis and proposes a research strategy that can deal with the complexity of the interface between these two different dimensions of the historical process under investigation, The first of these hypothesis is centered on the analytical priority of the concept of crisis. The second, in the centrality of the concept of identity. Both of them recognize the typically provisional character of the political responses produced during the period and the co-existence of different ideas and practices related to State and Nation embedded in the different temporalities they refer to. The project will thus be developed through an aggregate of singular researches, whose results will be permanently discussed between the participants and with the pertinent bibliography. The research results will be published as books (three of them collective, upon the general perspective of the project, other two, also collective, as result of sub-projects and five resulting from post-doctoral, PhD and MA researches); as articles to be published in important Brazilian and foreign journals; and finally as papers to be presented in national and international seminars, alongside a diversity of other products such as book reviews, critical edition of ancient manuscripts, provisional texts for discussion, chronologies, etc.). All this stuff will be presented in the project web site which will be on line within the next three months. All the undergraduate and graduate researches (MA and PhD) of this project have been submitted to funding agencies and have been, all of them, approves and recommended. The project is intended to incorporated new researches at these levels. At last, it may be significant to remind that the project is joined by researches located in important Brazilian and foreign institutions. (AU)
