Abstract

The research project aims to map, inventory and analyze the production and circulation of books dedicated to indigenous issues in Brazil, between 1930-1967, with the aim of discussing how the publishing market interacted with teaching and research institutions, intellectual networks and policies of civil society and State bodies to promote the topic in the public debate around development projects and the construction of national identity.Based on the methods of the History of Books and Publishing, we will start from the accumulation of reference research in the area that defines the constitution of brasilianas collections as editorial realities that express a moment of impulse for brazilian nationalism in the 1930s, proposing to promote a heritage of fundamental works, their authors and other members, as references to safeguard memory, training instruments and intellectual contributions dedicated to thinking about the future of the country. From this link between publishing and politics, we orient our gaze, seeking to see how intellectual production on the indigenous issue appears in such projects and in others that emerged over the following three decades, inspired, on the one hand, by their commercial success and prestige which they achieved by building themselves as modernizing platforms for Brazilian thought; on the other, due to the market's need to follow important political processes and ruptures in our republican history: the constitution of the Estado Novo (1937-1945); the construction of the Liberal Republic, (1945-1964); and the first years of organization of the Military Dictatorship (1964-1967).The intellectual debate and political action of various social groups, especially the elites active in the respective periods, were dedicated to producing speeches, arguments, inventories, images and studies on the presence of indigenous societies within Brazilian society to project an ideal nation , or ideas of nation, corresponding to their expectations of progress, development and identity. We intend to recognize these aspects in book production and circulation to move forward with another angle of critical discussion on this historiographical topic.
