Abstract

This investigation deals with a visual analysis of black representation in the Brazilian publishing market in the years 2019, 2020, and 2021, having as its object of study magazine covers and the front pages of printed newspapers with national circulation. Discussing the state of the art of Brazilian print media and based on a time frame based on the murder of George Floyd and João Alberto Silveira Freitas, the research aims to identify a possible parallel between the repercussion of cases of racism in Brazil and the representative increase of black people in covers before and after the occurrence of these facts. In addition, it is intended to carry out a survey of data on the different emphases practiced by the Brazilian print media when reporting national and international cases of racism, facts relevant to the black population in contrast to the white population, as well as the racial representation relevant to gender and sexual orientation. From the data obtained, and aiming to understand the way of representation of the black population according to the principles of graphic design of printed media, it will be carried out - on the covers where there is the occurrence of black representation - syntactic-visual analysis according to the principles of Editorial Design by architect Jan V. White (2007). Finally, the work intends to discuss issues related to the graphic designer's possibilities of acting as an agent of social transformation, in addition to pointing out ways to enhance the projective action of these professionals for racial equity in Brazil.
