Abstract

This international collaborative project between São Paulo State University (UNESP) and Karolinska Institutet (KI-SE) aims to explore Hevea brasiliensis-derived extracellular vesicles (HB-EVs) as a novel, EVs plant-based smart therapy for cancer. Building on UNESP's ongoing FAPESP-funded Young Investigator Award, the project will first characterize the innate anticancer properties of HB-EVs and compare them to mammalian-derived EVs. In a second phase, HB-EVs will be bioengineered with targeting moieties (e.g., monoclonal antibodies) and loaded with therapeutic RNA to increase tumor specificity and efficacy, reducing toxic effects on healthy tissues. The collaboration will integrate UNESP's expertise in biomaterials and regenerative medicine with KI-SE's leadership in EV bioengineering and precision oncology. Through exchange visits, joint workshops, and advanced training, the initiative will generate high-impact data, co-authored publications, and patentable innovations. Ultimately, this partnership seeks to establish HB-EVs as a safe, cost-effective, and cell-free alternative to current cancer therapies, while strengthening international cooperation and translational research capacity in both institutions.
