Abstract

Afforestation and reforestation initiatives have intensified in the last decade, especially in the context of removing carbon from the atmosphere for credit purposes, timber and achieving emissions neutrality targets. These projects fall within the scope of "Agriculture, Forestry and Land Use" (AFOLU) and the certification of the carbon credits generated must follow "Measurement, Reporting and Verification" (MRV) protocols. To this end, there is a need for reliable data to support feasibility analyses and monitoring of carbon flows. In this sense, the company has been working hard to develop predictive models that calculate current and future stocks of carbon compartments. In order to better test/validate such models, the aim is to overcome the following scientific and technological challenges currently faced by the company, namely: (i) measurement of carbon stock in real time or remote time close to "zero" time; (ii) measurement of carbon stock in real time, throughout the development of a project; (iii) prediction of carbon stock increases in the future; (iv) identification and indication of sites with greater suitability and technical-operational feasibility for project development; (v) systematization of outputs and translation into sustainability indicators to be used for the management of AFOLU projects, in their different scopes (REDD - Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation; ARR - Afforestation, Reforestation, Revegetation; IFM - Improved Forest Management; ALM - Agricultural Land Management). The aim is to test/validate such models using carbon data (primary and secondary data) and to build sustainability indicators based on official MRV protocols/methodologies, as well as to integrate such information into a platform to be developed, tested and validated in different environments, reaching, at the end of the project, the maximum Technology Readiness Level (TRL 9), as well as to commercially offer MRV services.
