Abstract

A twelve-month research program aimed at identifying surface and internal crystallization in glasses using differential thermal analysis (DSC) is proposed. This study involves conducting a series of DSC experiments using glasses whose crystallization mechanism is already known as well as delineating theoretical DSC thermal signatures using pre-assigned kinetic parameters for crystallization. A prior knowledge of the crystallization mechanism (surface or internal) occurring in a glass is important for developing glass-ceramics with microstructures and properties appropriate for specific applications. The independent effect of surface or internal crystallization on the kinetics (of crystallization) and DSC thermal profile will also be investigated. The results of this research would not only enhance the current understanding of the fundamental processes involved in surface and internal crystallization but will help produce a data-base that can be used to identify the crystallization mechanism occurring in an unknown glass.
