Abstract

The understanding of organized molecular systems, and the synthesis of polymers of comparable properties, is producing new knowledge and increasingly being applied. This Project proposes studies of organized molecular systems extending from the theoretical description of ion binding at interfaces to the design of pharmaceutically relevant systems for drug delivery. This project is divided in subprojects, each covering a particular aspect of organized systems. The integration of the PI's of each subproject is demonstrated by joint authorship scientific publications. In this Project we intend to maintain the collaboration of a set of independent research groups that form a nucleus of science and technology in the field of organized molecular systems. The distribution of ions in micellar, vesicular and microemulsions will be analyzed theoretically, using mean field approaches and experimentally by chemical, trapping. The effect of neutral additives on the properties of molecular aggregates will be analyzed using urea as a model. The interfacial urea concentration will be determined by chemical trapping. Urea will be used as a monomer to obtain microcapsules for drug delivery in a vesicular medium. The rate and mechanism of proton transfer in organized molecular systems will be analyzed. The mechanism of mitochondrial uncoupling in plants by PUMP (recently described by our group) will be analyzed by preparing proteoliposomes containing PUMP. The groups propose 1) development of theoretical and experimental techniques for that analysis of electrical and polar properties of membranes; 2) development of analytical techniques for probing interfacial ion distribution; 3) study of the effect of caotropic agents on the structure and modulation 'of interfacial properties 4) study of energy conversion and/or control by PUMP and 5) development of nanoparticles for drug delivery.
