Systemic approach for the development of advanced refractory castables - II

Abstract

Refractory materials have played a fundamental role in scientific and technological development. Owing to the strong competitiveness unleashed in recent years by the process of globalization, the steel mills have focused on manufacturing high quality products at lower costs. As a result, these requisites have extended to the production of refractory materials, from which they demand increasingly better performance at lower costs. Castable refractories have successfully accomplished these tasks, for which reason they have already replaced pre-shaped bodies in almost 60% of metallurgical applications and, today, are the most advanced refractory ceramic materials. Nevertheless, the reported findings are particularly confusing in the case of refractory castables since, in the majority of cases, the researchers who carried out the evaluations were not the ones that produced the castables. The authors of this proposal have found that advances and new technologies can effectively be made in this area only when research on refractory castables is carried out based on a systemic and integrated approach involving both processing and properties. Within this framework, the main objectives of the project are: 1) contribute scientifically and technologically toward the definition and selection of dispersants for suspensions with high concentrations of solids, the rheological evaluations, the study of drying and the thermomechanical properties of refractory castables; 2) share the knowledge generated with the productive sector through courses, joint projects and the qualification of Masters and Ph.D.s to act in the industry; 3) education and qualification of human resources (Masters, Ph.D.s and Post-Doc.s) and dissemination of the results obtained through the publication of scientific and technological articles.
