Liberalization, stability and growth (balance and perspectives of Brazilian experience in the 1990s)

Abstract

The main purpose of this research project is to study the consequences of Brazil's insertion in the globalisation process, especially regarding their implications on economic policy. The research is based on two premises The first is that after almost ten years of liberal policies in the country, there are enough results to allow a thorough evaluation of the Brazilian experience of structural reforms. The second is that this evaluation has become more relevant after the crisis on Asian countries, and must be done in the light of these recent events Currency crises, financial instability, contagion phenomena, initiatives of international co-ordination have been the subject of intense debate and cannot be absent of any serious attempt of evaluating the perspectives of the Brazilian economy at the edge of the XXI century. The research work will concentrate on five main themes: international constraints, financial openness and the economic financing; stability, growth and public finance; commercial openness and economic restructuring; labour market and income distribution.
