Abstract

This proposal initiates a genetic study of spontaneous abortions/ stillborns using standard cytogenetics and fluorescence in situ hybridization (fish) at the new Marilia genetics laboratory. Goals are to: 1) compare findings with previous studies by the principal investigator and others; 2) establish culture success rates in Marilia laboratory; 3) establish chromosome abnormality rates in the region; 4) evaluate if direct interphase fish is useful for screening trisomies and triploids in abortuses/ stillborns; 5) evaluate if direct interphase fish detects confined placental mosaicism; 6) develop computer-assisted karyotyping and color imaging in the Marilia laboratory as an aid to teaching, research and clinical service.
