Abstract

This proposal deals with several plant viruses transmitted by the tenuipalpidae mite Brevipalpus spp. and intends to give a significative advance on the knowledge of the virus/vector/host plant relationships including biological, pathological, biochemical, molecular, immunological, morphological, cytopathological aspects as well as resolving problems in taxonomy, epidemiology and control of the disease/vector. The most important member of this group is the citrus leprosis virus (CiLV), endemic in Brazil (and present in Argentina, Paraguay, Venezuela and more recently in Panama) and causing up to US$ 100 million/year to the growers in direct losses and mite control measurements. The previous work developed by the proposing group discovered 9 new diseases transmitted by the Brevipalpus mite in Brazil (in plants as passion flower, ivy, Hibiscus spp., Malvaviscum, Clerodendron, Schefflera, Solanum violaefolium adding to the 5 previously known (CiLV, Ligustrum ringspot, zonate chlorosis, orchid fleck and coffee ringspot) thus creating a possibility to study most of them together for comparison. The group has large experience with these viruses and the mite vector and has suitable facilities to carry out the research. Because there are still some technical difficulties in purifying and handling CiLV, the expectation is to find another easier to deal, to serve as model and through it better understand this group of virus. The final goal is to get epidemiological parameters which may lead to a more efficient and less expensive controle measure of diseases economically important as citrus leprosis and passion fruit green spot. It is a multidisciplinar, 4 year project involving areas as plant virology, acarology, molecular biology, plant anatomy/ultrastructure and epidemiology to be conducted by a team of experts coordinated by the proponent. Graduate and undergraduate students will also participate assuring the formation of more competence in plant virology, acarology, call biology, etc. (AU)
