Abstract

The aim of this project is to characterize the response of the pleural cavity in the face of diverse situations. We will seek to recognize in humans the physiopathological mechanisms that determine the appearance of pleural effusion and its clinical repercussion: emotional and functional. We aim to define the point at which the presence of liquid determines the onset of clinical manifestations and the reversal with various therapeutic procedures. Better knowledge of the inflammation in the pleural space and of the mechanisms involved will allow us to evaluate critically the diagnostic tools and consider their own limitations. The emphasis of the study centers on effusion through tuberculosis and neoplasm, proposing epidemiological studies and new treatments. However, in addition to hoping for immediate responses for clinical situations, the studies include basic experimental research activities which we believe will go on to allow us to establish response in the future. The most salient example concerns the study on pleurodesis which analyze the sclerosant agents, their morbidity and the techniques for carrying them out. (AU)
