Abstract

The resolution of the inflammatory process depends on an effective balance between activation and deactivation of inflammatory cells. The activation of these cells is regulated by cytokines, hormones and bioactive lipids. Our research group's previous studies identified two additional possibilities to control the activation of inflammatory cells: 1) the catalytic action of peroxidase (MPO) on endogenous compounds, particularly melatonin, and 2) the participation of the acute phase protein serum amyloid A (SAA) in the activation of neutrophils and monocytic. Our aim now is to perform in-depth studies of the biological roles of SAA and the melatonin oxidation in the inflammation and progression of chronic diseases, to identify new modulators, and, to define the interrelationship between the NAOPH oxidase system and the enzymes, MPO and indoleamine 2, 3 dioxygenase in the cross-talk of cells of the immune system.
