Abstract

This project aims the synthesis and characterization of Advanced Carbons (AC) using feedstocks locally available. Initial activities are devoted to prepare mesophase pitch either from coal tars or petroleum refinery by-products such as decant oil. Thermal treatments, polymerization or distillation are programmed to obtain mesophase pitch samples. Commercially available AR-24 resin from Mitsubishi, would be the standard for characterization purposes. Conversion of the several mesophases to AC products such as carbon fibers, carbon-carbon composites, mesocarbon microbeads, synthetic graphite and fullerenes would involve specific process developments. Macroscopic physico-chemistry properties sensitive to molecular structures are to be measured. Softening points, quinoleine and toluene insolubles would indicate the evolution of feedstocks through the various stages. Microscopic structures of pitches and their evolution to final products would have to be followed by using advanced condensed matter characterization techniques like polarized light optical microscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, x-ray diffraction, Fourier transformed infra red absorption. They are appropriate to determinate the degree and type of condensation of aromatic structures. (AU)
