Abstract

Ultrasonometry is a non-invasive non-ionizing method to evaluate bane mass which is still under investigation concerning diseases such as osteoporosis. Despite the existence of works on the clinical application of the method, its use to evaluate the healing process of fractures is still considered experimental, since there is no clear application protocol, nor quantified parameters with time. An experimental in vitro study carried out among us showed that the ultrasound propagation velocity increases with the healing of osteotomies of the tibiae of sheep, steadily approaching the values measured in the normal tibiae, thus demonstrating a great potential for clinical application, perhaps not as replacement of the conventional methods (radiographs, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging), but as an additional method, with the advantage of being much cheaper and virtually devoid of any harmful effect. Furthermore, it can be applied with low cost portable equipment, without the need of specialized personnel. According to the proposed project, seven separate investigations will be conducted on the use of ultrasonometry of bone healing and cortical bane density using different experimental models. A clinical trial will also be undertaken to study the healing of forearm fractures in humans. Additionally, the technology of the equipment, so far only available as a laboratory assembly, will be improved so as to develop a commercial version with the assistance of a specialized manufacturer.
