Abstract

In 2003 an increase in the incidence of infections caused by methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) was observed in the Dermatology Unit of Hospital das Clínicas. The objective of this study is to evaluate the transmission of MRSA among the patients of this unit and characterize these isolates. Using surveillance cultures of the nares and skin MRSA-colonized patients will be detected. The isolates will be confirmed using PCR as described by Kearns et al.,1999 and susceptibility to various antimicrobials will be determined by broth microdilution. Using PCR the SCCmec type will be evaluated. The isolates will be typed using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. (AU)
