Abstract

The most frequent activities of nurses and nursing staff in the ICU (Intensive care unit)is related to plan the time and frequency of administration medication as well as to administer medication. This activity require a knowledge based in the discipline of Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology and about drug-drug interactions and adverse events. The objective of this project is to investigate the incidence of drug interactions in hospitalized patients in intensive care unities of six Brazilian cities: Sao Paulo, Ribeirao Preto, Recife, Fortaleza, Uberlandia e Goiania. The interactions will be observed through the medications administered and the frequency and schedule of the administration. The data will be collected in the nursing charts of patients hospitalized from January to July/ 2007. This period was chosen by convenient reason. The identification data of the patient and the medications as: name, dose, frequency and time will be collected in this period. For each patient will be analyzed the medication administered in the first three days of hospitalization on the ICU. The data will be registered in the Excel and the drug-drug interactions will be analyzed with the Epocrates software. The study will be conducted after approval of the Ethics Committee and of the hospital approval. Studies about drug-drug interactions offer to the professional opportunities to increase the knowledge and to avoid dangerous medication errors and adverse events in the patient and increase the patient safety in medications.
