Abstract

Light influences almost all aspects of plant development, from seed germination to the transition to the reproductive state (Schäefer & Nagy, 2004). The function of the main photoreceptor families of higher plants, the phytochrome and cryptochrome families, has been investigated mainly in model plants, however, information from other species is scarce. Recent genomic approaches in a range of model plant systems allow the knowledge derived from studies with Arabidopsis thaliana to be rapidly expanded to other plant species. In petunia, light regulates the developmental programs controlling characteristics of commercial interest, such as: plant architecture, odour emission, corolla development and anthocyanin and flavonoid biosynthesis. Photosensory and physiological roles of the B type phytochromes and cryptochrome 2 will be investigated in Petunia hybrida using gain- and loss of function mutants by gene overexpression and silencing in transgenic plants. This approach will provide not only clues about the function of the yet uncharacterized endogenous photoreceptor molecules but also a tool for structure function analysis of these molecules. (AU)
