Abstract

Severe maternal morbidity has been considered an alternative possibly more effective as health indicator than maternal mortality. In Brazil where the coverage of services is variable and the integration of hospital information is still weak, a population survey may represent the only manner of obtaining information for the whole country on the prevalence of severe maternal morbidity. Objectives: to validate a questionnaire on severe maternal morbidity; to quantify the sensitivity and specificity in detecting obstetrical complications through selected question or combination of questions used in interviews with women in comparison with the diagnosis recorded in their clinical files; to evaluate possible interfering factors on the quality of information given by women on severe obstetrical complications, especially the time elapsed between the complication and the interview and the schooling. Methods: this will be a study on the validity of a questionnaire about severe maternal morbidity, applying an structured and pre coded questionnaire by phone to women who had delivered in a period of until five years. Women discharged from the ward sand from the intensive care unit of the institution will interviewed. For a sensitivity of 80% with a confidence interval of 95% and a specificity of 90% with a 95%CI, a sample size of 350 women will be needed. Data collection will be performed with phone interviews and revision of clinical records. The women found will be explained on the study and the purpose of the contact. In addition, an oral consent of the woman will be obtained and recorded as well as the whole interview. Then an structured and pre coded questionnaire will be applied. The respective clinical records will be reviewed for checking the information obtained through interviews. Data will be collected, stored and analysed using the softwares Epi Info. Sensitivity and specificity will be calculated for each question or combination of questions for the detection of obstetrical complications, having the information of the clinical records as golden standard. The respective 95%CI will also be calculated. Comparisons between the recall period and sensitivity and specificity for each key question will be performed, as well between the womans schooling and the validity parameters. Tests of association will be used according the characteristics of normality of data. (AU)
