Abstract

We will analyze the market of loan and the conditions of financing for the province of São Paulo in three distinct regions: Valley of the Paraíba (Lorena), West (Ribeirão Preto) and São Paulo. From the survey of books of registers of mortgages of these cities it will be possible to form an ample picture concerning the credit market of the province between 1865 and 1914. This documentation elapsed of the mortgage legislation of 1864-65 that it regulated the functioning of this market. Few studies existed already on the subject and, in general, they point the importance of the bank credit, mainly the participation of determined banks; as, for example, the Bank of Brazil. However, great part of the financing granted at that time occurred by means of other sources physical people ("capitalist") and commercial houses. Thus, the strategy of research of the mortgages makes possible the widening of our agreement of this market. (AU)
