Abstract

Sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) is one of the ten vegetables crops more consumed in Brazil. The incidence of viruses is causing several damages in production of plants of the genera Capsicum sp. Until recently the only potyvirus infecting sweet pepper and pepper in Brazil was PVY. In 2002, a new possible potyvirus was identified and called as Pepper yellow mosaic virus (PepYMV), causing yellow mosaic and leaf deformation. The objective of this work are: to study the potyvirus infecting Capsicum sp. in São Paulo State, the species occurring and the biological properties of these potyviruses. Surveys will be made on three regions from São Paulo state, samples will be analysed by electron microscope, followed by RNA extraction, RT-PCR with universal primers for potyvirus and the most representative samples from each region will be analysed by sequencing the RT-PCR fragment. The ability to overcome the resistance provided by the hybrids Magali R and Rubia R, today considered resistante to PVY and PepYMV, will be evaluate by sap transmission. (AU)
