Abstract

Young adults undergo intense physical, emotional and cognitive development, aggravated by such factors as College admission, establishment of important relationships, independence from their parents and the beginning of a labor life. In the last years worries about the double journey of studying and working have been discussed. Work and study can be a big challenge for young people. On the other hand, it grants the means required to pay college fees, and/or the living expenses and, at the same time, may provide professional experience in addition to the academic learning. The double journey (work and study) may result in or aggravate health problems, not detected in initial stages as observed in previous studies with high school students. The present study will be carried out in a public university from the State of São Paulo. It will participate in this study working students in the age bracket of 18-25 years, enrolled in the evening period. The objectives of the present study are: 1) To evaluate living and working conditions and health symptoms; 2) To evaluate social representations regarding work-study and health; 3) To compare patterns of the wake-sleep cycle, sleepiness, life styles, and daily activities; 4) To evaluate the effects of intervention measures to reduce sleepiness of working students during class hours; 5) To analyze biological components associated to wake-sleep cycle.
