Identification, characterization and study of biodegradation of microcystins in blooms of cyanobacterias by mass spectrometry

Abstract

The microcystins are toxins produced in bloom of cyanobacterias and represent a big risk for human health. However, the research in this area is incipient in our country as public health and the water treatment as well in relation the quality and competitive aquaculture products inside (and outside) of the global market. In this contest, one of the goals of this project is the development of fast and sensible methods of characterization and identification of microcystin directly in biological matrix which are complexes and where the concentration of these toxins is very low ng/mL and also in water reservoir through the Mass Spectrometry. With the development of this methods which will add one big innovation in the cyanobacteria monitoring in the Brazil, the monitoring of water bodies will be more efficient to conducting with big precision the water treatment process. The second goal of this project is the study of mechanism of biodegradation of microcystins and elucidates this biodegradation also for mass spectrometry. This study is the fundamental relevance because at least the products or intermediates produce by the biodegradation process are the least toxics witch your precursor not rare times go to the conclusions or fake decisions, principally when the problem is the water treatment for the human consume. Besides, the study of mechanism of biodegradation of microcystin will give relevant information for the search of efficient process witch can to carry your complete mineralization. It is important to say witch are involved with the development of methods witch can easily put in the state and federal Laboratories of Analysis of monitoring and water treatment as well the private initiative laboratories, giving directly for the well good of society and environment.
