Abstract

Wetlands with water macrophytes are based on natural ecosystems which are partially or totally flooded throughout the year and are used for waste water treatment in several systems so that the eutrophization produced may decrease. Current project will evaluate the retention capacity and dynamics of physical, chemical and biological variables of a wetland with water macrophytes. The wetland lies at the effluent of the breeding ponds system of the Aquaculture Centre of UNESP, Jaboticabal SP Brazil and directly discharges into the Stream Jaboticabal. Current evaluation is foregrounded on ecological information on the effects of water macrophytes as retaining elements of organic and inorganic matter undertaken by the hydrological analysis in the effluent where the wetland is set. As a rule, studies on ecological systems are programmed for a long period of time so that the structure and the behavior of the biotic and the abiotic components of the area under investigation are known. Long-term analysis proposed has been divided into three stages: the first two have been undertaken between 2006 and 2008 (FAPESP, 2006/50315-4) and the third is still being executed with the help of a Master's degree scholarship (FAPESP, 2008/56621-5). The project also includes other investigations (FAPESP - 93/0994-0; 97/5163-0; 2003/2004 CRSP (USA)) undertaken by the same laboratory. The possibility of reutilizing water resources is endeavored through current analysis of the dynamics and the capacity of the retention and removal of polluting substances from the built wetland. Increase in the productivity of agricultural and aquaculture activities, decrease in environmental damage, economical alternatives and other factors are an asset for the renewal of water resources. Effluent treatment with wetlands may be suggested to producers and institutions with an improvement of water quality in an efficient, natural and economically viable manner. (AU)
