Impacts of pasture management and supplementation in growing beef steers during periods of wet and wet-dry transition and termination strategies in the dry season

Abstract

Given the continuing need to explain questions about the interactions among the management of tropical grass pastures, supplemental feeding and animal performance, and improve the use of fibrous carbohydrates through the manipulation of rumen fermentation will be offered four trials with aimed to assess the impacts of pasture management and supplementation in growing beef steers during the wet and dry-water transition season and different strategies of termination in the dry season. The experiment is divided into two phases, the first consist in growing beef steers during the wet and dry-water transition season in deferred grazing of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu with three supplementation strategies. The second stage of the first phase consist the termination of the animals in periods of dry (July/2010 to Outubro/2010) using two strategies, in grazing or confined. The animals that will be finished on pasture receive three levels of supplementation (0.8 to 1.2, 1.2 to 1.6, 1.6 to 2.0% BW dry matter basis). The animals that will be finished in confinement will receive three different diets with different roughage/concentrate. The second phase aim to assess sward heights (15, 25 and 35 cm) of pasture Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu and three supplementation strategies for growing beef steers during the wet and wet-dry transition season (the December/2010 maio/2011). The second step is the termination of the same animals divided into the termination confined experiment (A) or finishing on pasture with supplementation (experiment B), both in the dry season (June to outubro/2011).
