Abstract

The combination of smoking and alcohol consumption is an important risk factor for the development of mucosal lesions of the airways, including carcinoma. Tongue and pharynx are responsible for one third of cases. The histological and immunohistochemical findings provide scientific support and had demonstrated the importance of tumor markers as indicators of cancer. Objectives: To study the effects of the smoking and alcohol on the tongue and pharynx mucosa. Histological and immunohistochemical studies of p53 and Ki - 67 in rats. Methods: 40 rats are divided into 4 groups of 10 animals each: GI-control (animals kept in cages, with free supply of food and water), G II (animals with free supply of water and exposed daily to inhalation of cigarette smoke), GIII (animals with free supply of food and submitted to the ingestion of increasing doses of ethanol) and GIV (animals exposed simultaneously to the ingestion of increasing doses of ethanol and to the inhalation of cigarette smoke). After 260 days, they will be sacrificed and the airway segment will be removed and examined. Biopsies are performed on the compromised areas, on the posterior portion of the tongue and lateral wall of the hypopharynx. The fragments will be fixed in 10% formalin and sent for histological and immunohistochemical studies (monoclonal antibodies to p53 and Ki-667). The results will be analyzed statistically. (AU)
