Abstract

In the preclinical stage of drug development, several in vitro models have been used as an alternative to the use of laboratory animals. The primary hepatocytes culture is one of the widely employed in vitro models for citotoxicity and drug metabolism studies, however the hepatoma cell lines can also be considered a good alternative if used in enzyme-induced state. The carotenoid bixin, extracted from urucum showed in vivo studies the capacity to induce some isoforms of the cytochrome P450 system, the main enzyme system involved in drug metabolism. In this work, bixin will be employed as inducer of cytochrome P450 system in HepG2 and Huh7 hepatoma cell lines. The bixin induced cell lines will be assessment as in vitro model in citotoxicity and drug metabolism studies. (AU)
