Abstract

The phrenic nerve of rats is the main nerve involved in the respiratory control because it is the only source of innervation for the diaphragm. Histological examination of the diaphragm have shown gender differences in fiber composition and morphometry, but gender differences on the phrenic nerve morphology and morphometry were not examined yet. Studies that investigated the interaction between hypertension, gender and respiratory control have mainly focused the sleep apnea syndrome, and male gender and hypertension were suggested as risks for human sleep apnea. Animal models have been useful to investigate the relationship between hypertension and abnormal control of breathing. However, a possible relationship between hypertension and abnormal ventilatory control was never examined before in the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR), an outstanding hypertensive model. Moreover, the literature lacks a thorough description of the phrenic nerve morphology and morphometry in this experimental model an in the normotensive controls, the Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats. A descriptive morphologic and morphometric study of the phrenic nerves in male and female SHR and WKY will be investigated. Strain and gender differences on phrenic nerve myelinated fiber morphometry will be described for the first time in this experimental model of hypertension, pointing to the need for thorough functional studies of this nerve on male and female SHR.
