Abstract

The evaluation of patients with OSAS by ENT has the purpose of evaluating possible obstructive sites in pharynx. Nevertheless, its importance in practical clinics has been questioned by some authors, mainly because it is an exam performed during the day, with the patient awaked, to evaluate a sleeping disease. Nasendoscopy during induced sleep has increasingly been used with the advantage of evaluating the pharynx during sleep. However, this exam has not been validated, and important questions about this exam still remain. This project has the purpose of: 1 - to compare exams performed in the same patient, the first with spontaneous sleep and the second with sleep induced by propofol. This comparison will observe if propofol changes the pattern off sleep, and if these changes are substantial to invalidate this exam. 2 - to perform endoscopy during the different phases of sleep, observing if there is a critical moment when the endoscopy should be performed; 3 - to compare these results with those obtained with the exams regularly used in ENT practical clinics, as Müller maneuver and Friedman scale, to detect if one of them could predict the exam performed during sleep.
