Aquisition of Equipments for the Unity of Sleep Studies of the Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies

Abstract

Polysomnography is the gold standard assessment for the diagnosis of sleep-disordered breathing. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a public health problem with serious consequences and its prevalence increases in the cleft lip and palate population. It is estimated that approximately 25% of patients with cleft lip and palate present polysomnographic finding compatible with OSA, which may increase in the presence of certain genetic syndromes. This is a fundamental evaluation in the post-operative follow-up of secondary surgeries involving the palate and pharynx, particularly the pharyngeal flap, used for the treatment of velopharyngeal dysfunction. Objectives: To provide the Sleep Studies Unit of the Laboratory of Physiology of the HRAC-USP with an update of polysomnography equipment, as well as equipment for its rehabilitation (CPAP and accessories), aimed at the diagnosis and treatment of sleep breathing disorders in adults and children with cleft lip and palate and craniofacial anomalies. Expected Outcomes: The acquisition of the requested equipment will allow the methodological update and will enable the continuity of studies in the research line related to Sleep Disordered Breathing, of the Laboratory of Physiology and other researchers of the institution.
