Abstract

Local osteitis is a common find in chronic sinusitis' patients and also may play a critical role in the pathogenesis of chronic rhinosinusitis(CRS) by inducing persistent inflammatory changes in the surrounding mucosa. It is not elucidated the causative factor that induces the osteitis. Aim: Evidenciate bacterial biofilms in local osteitis of the underlying bone in chronic sinusitis with nasal polyps. Methods: A prospective study performed on 30 patients undergoing functional endoscopic sinus surgery for CRS with nasal polyps (defined by clinical and radiologic criteria) irresponsive to medical treatment e 30 controls. All enrolled patients will be analyzed for demographic, clinical, endoscopic, radiologic and histopathologic of ethmoid bulla(optic microscopy, transmisson electron microscopy and scanning electron microscpy) data at the surgery time and after six months and one year.
