Expression of estrogen and progesterone receptors, cyclooxigenase-2, aromatase, apoptosis and proliferative markers in endometrial polyps in pre- and postmenopausal women

Abstract

Endometrial polyps are common in women, most frequently during the postmenopausal years. As the etiopathogenesis and the malignant potential of endometrial polyps have yet to be fully clarified, the routine polypectomy could expose these women to an unnecessary risk. Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of malignant polyps and the expression of hormones receptors, tumor markers, cyclooxigenase-2, aromatase in malignant polyps, benign polyps and atrophic endometrium in pre- and postmenopausal women. Methods: Using the surgical database of the hospital belonging to the Center for Women´s Integrated Healthcare (CAISM) at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas, all women who have been submitted to surgical hysteroscopy for endometrial polypectomy in the period between January 1998 and December 2008 will be selected for this study. We estimate that in this period about 800 polyps were removed by hysteroscopy. The clinical characteristics will be analysed as well as the expression of hormones receptors, aromatase, COX-2, Bcl2, Ki67 using the paraffin-embedded specimens stocked at the Anatomy Pathologic Department in all the polyps selected. It will be compared the expression of these receptors and markers among the benign, malignant and the same number of atrophic endometrium samples. The immunohistochemical analysis will be done at the Immunohistochemical Laboratory of the do Cancer Hospital-SP using the technics of TMA (tissue microarray). Statistical analysis: The comparison of the dependent variables (ER, PR, COX-2, aromatase, Ki-67, Bcl-2) among the groups, will be done using chi-square test or Fisher test and prevalence ratios with their respective 95% confidence intervals. To evaluate the factors associated with malignancy will be used the logistic regression analysis. (AU)
