Abstract

The umbilical hernias cause important financial losses, in the value of resale of the animal, being able to provoke weight loss and to facilitate systemic infections. Serial peritoneal fluid evaluation is a useful indicator for assessing peritoneal response to injury; it helps to decide whether or not surgery should be performed, and the early identification of postoperative complications decreases the morbidity and mortality of these animals. The objectives of this study are to investigate the release of interleukin-6 (IL-6) in plasma and peritoneal in calves with umbilical hernias before and after herniorrhaphy, to try to determine if this cytokine could be used as an inflammtion marker as observed in humans and horses. In affirmative case, we will try to determine whether alterations in IL-6 levels occurred earlier in peritoneal fluid or plasma. (AU)
