Abstract

The configuration and dimensions of the upper airway are determined by the anatomical structures that form or lie around the pharinx, including the soft tissue, muscles and craniofacial skeleton. Alteration on those structures can lead to constriction or colapse of the airway, thus leading to a disturbance commonly diagnosed on the Brazilian population, known as obstructive sleep hypopnea and apnea syndrome. Evaluation for surgical treatment demands a multidisciplinary approach, with consideration of the upper airway, craniofacial skeleton, maxillary and mandibular growth and dental occlusion. Orthognathic surgical procedures, commonly used ifor the correction of dentofacial deformities, have proved to be the most efficient treatment modality for the severe cases of obstructive sleep hypopnea and apnea syndrome. Many of those patients actually present with several forms of dentofacial deformity. The syndrome is most frequent in patients with Angle class II deformities. However, dentoskeletal Angle class III patients by mandibular prognatism or maxillary deficiency may present a reduction of airway dimensions after surgical correction that has been much less studied. Most studies are about the class II patients, while the long-term consequences of mandibular retrusion or mandibular retrusion associated with maxillary advancement are not well known. The objective of the present study is to retrospectively evaluate the changes in upper airway dimensions in Angle class III patients treated with maxillary and/or mandibular procedures using the Arnett-Gunson FAB Surgery cephalometric analysis.
