Abstract

The present study entitled "Oral health and quality of life in adolescents" aims to evaluate the impact of the clinical and socioeconomic characteristics in the quality of life and adolescents' performance in school and possesses three objectives: 1. To evaluate, through a cross-sectional study, the caries prevalence, periodontal disease, malocclusion, hypoplasia and dental fractures in adolescents; 2 - to test the existence of associations among the above-mentioned characteristics, the socioeconomic level and quality of life; 3 - to test the existence of associations between the appraised indicators and the performance school of the students. The sample will be composed of 554 12 year-old individuals from schools of the city of Juiz de Fora, MG, selected randomly by systematic process. Data of the indexes of dental caries, fractures, community periodontal index, index of defects of development of the modified enamel and malocclusion will be collected. Relative information about quality of life will be obtained through the application of questionnaires to the children (Child Oral Health Quality of life Questionnaires -COHQoL) and to the parents (Parental Perceptions Questionnaire -PPQ) translated and validated by Barbosa (2008). The socioeconomic level of children's family will be obtained through a instrument validated by Meneghim et al. (2007). Besides, each participant's performance will be obtained through their school notes. The analysis of the data will be accomplished through descriptive statistics (frequencies, averages, deviations pattern, minimum value, maximum value), test of qui-square to compare the frequencies and the data it will be analyzed using univariate and multivariate logistic regression to evaluate the level of association among the variables.
